Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
